Episode 73: Memory Meditation with Thea

Transcript

00:06

Hi, I'm Thea Charles, and this is the push or pivot podcast. This podcast has interviews, stories and tools to inspire and guide you to put your fears aside and trust yourself through the push and pivots of your life.

00:36

We are in constant motion, checking off the items on our way to our goals. We're just getting caught up in the day to day monotony, that we don't take time to rest.

00:48

For this episode, I thought it would be nice to have a change of pace and do a meditation practice together. Meditation is a natural state of rest while you're still awake and alert.

01:04

This will be a memory meditation,

01:07

I recommend that you are somewhere safe, not driving, or doing anything that could cause harm to yourself or others. This meditation is an invitation to remember our own spontaneous moments of meditation. First, I'll ask some questions to set the tone. And then we'll move to the guided portion. Sound good? Okay, let's begin.

01:35

Some of my favorite spontaneous meditation moments happen at the beach. I love the sound of the waves, the way the breeze feels the salt in the air, the sun and the laughter. When I think of the beach, I think of all the fun we used to have as kids playing in the water. And then getting to do that with my own kids. It's just

02:00

so fun and so relaxing to me.

02:05

I also love walking outside and taking a deep breath after a rain.

02:11

These are just some spontaneous moments where I just feel alive.

02:18

So let's see what spontaneous moments you have.

02:24

When did you feel grateful for being alive?

02:28

What are some of your favorite ways to rest and recharge?

02:34

What are some memories that warm your heart

02:39

and try to recall some of your favorite experiences.

02:46

If you need to, you can hit pause and contemplate these questions and then come back for the guided portion.

03:04

Okay,

03:06

find a comfortable position to be in.

03:10

Feel free to either be seated or lay down.

03:15

You can sit cross legged or in a chair with your feet on the ground. Grab a blanket if you feel like it.

03:26

This is a simple and fun exploration of meditation.

03:37

In this meditation, you remember some of your favorite experiences. Those times when you naturally have taken a breath and felt the joy of being alive.

03:52

That could be anything

03:55

gazing at the night sky and being in total wonder.

04:04

holding a baby

04:07

looking into their eyes and feeling the miracle of life.

04:20

It could be doing your favorite sport.

04:25

Feeling so energized and in touch with your own life force. Your own power,

04:35

your own freedom.

04:52

It could be taking a moment upon awakening in the morning.

04:58

lying there and delicious

05:00

relaxation,

05:02

feeling the movement of your life,

05:06

preparing for your day.

05:12

Anything, and everything can be something that you claim as your natural meditation

05:21

will build on this.

05:29

You can even take a moment right now.

05:33

And remember an experience like that.

05:37

Choose one that you feel like being with now.

05:48

Then, just as you are in whatever position you are in,

05:54

feeling what it is like to be in your body, when you are remembering this moment.

06:02

A sense of how you are breathing.

06:06

The sense of being with yourself,

06:11

perhaps, a sense of joy in your heart.

06:23

Inquire what permission, you are naturally giving to yourself, as you claim this wonderful experience.

06:40

Notice how you feel.

06:43

Notice how your awareness floats through your experience.

07:26

Of course, you will notice that different associations may come

07:32

different feelings,

07:35

different thoughts.

07:38

All of this is part of the journey

07:41

of remembering.

07:48

When you are ready,

07:51

just feel what aspect of this experience. You want to continue to remember.

07:59

That's a meditation that you can do at any time.

08:10

It could be that sense of how you are breathing.

08:15

How you feel inside of yourself.

08:20

How you feel in the relationship to the environment.

08:37

Maybe a word or two floats into your awareness

08:42

that hints at the gift of this memory meditation.

08:51

Breathing with that word or two.

09:01

You may even imagine turning into the same feeling

09:06

with the same words tomorrow and anytime.

09:17

This is a way of being deeply in touch with yourself.

09:22

Coming home to yourself.

09:25

honoring your own experience

09:29

your own instinctive natural doorway into connection into freedom into the feeling of being nourished.

10:05

Now, we gently practice the art of transition from meditation.

10:13

Embrace your experience.

10:17

taking a moment to feel

10:21

to be aware of this meditation journey.

10:29

Very gently, you might include awareness of the environment around you now.

10:36

staying in touch with yourself

10:40

and gently including awareness of the world.

10:51

Take a few gentle breaths.

10:55

Perhaps your eyes remain closed.

10:59

Or you can open them a few times.

11:03

Gradually making that bridge the connection between the inner and outer worlds.

11:19

If you like, begin to move gently. If you have been in one position,

11:27

maybe stretch, maybe on

11:32

wiggle your fingers and your toes.

11:43

You may also have an intention of moving through your day with this feeling that you touched in your meditation.

11:56

And when you're ready,

11:59

move into the rest of your day.

12:12

Welcome back.

12:15

How did your meditation feel?

12:18

What are you taking from this practice?

12:23

whether this was your first meditation, or your 100th I hope you feel rested, and we'll share what you learned with a friend.
